Lost Mesa Ranch is a 40 acre wildlife habitat in the
heart of the Lost Hills of North Texas. A couple miles from Saint Jo, it's a savannah of native grasses, hardwood trees and abundant wildlife with scenic mesas overlooking the Red River Valley and beyond.
What started as a reckless, spontaneous land purchase morphed into a passion project of building a haven with my father's hand tools. Hoping to build more and prepare a place for others to come and experience Creation and escape the pressures of city life.
You wouldn’t know it driving along Highway 82 in Texas but, explore just north between the towns Muenster and Nokona, you’ll find majestic rolling hills. Most Texans simply aren’t aware it exists and you won’t experience it from the highway. Some call the region the ‘Lost Hills of North Texas’ while others use the ‘North Texas Hill Country.' It’s a sparsely populated area and in our opinion one of the best kept secrets in the Lone Star State.
When we walked the 40 acre property for the first time, we couldn’t believe the steep, rocky terrain was only little more than an hour from our flat, manufactured suburban scene. It was amazing and we immediately fell in love. Recklessly skimming through the due diligence, we quickly scooped up the acreage. The hills were calling and we answered.
The land has three large flat areas with amazing views overlooking the Red River Valley and are suited nicely for habitat support, agriculture or homesites. In geographic terms, they could be called bluffs or mesas depending on who you ask. Repeated visits were more than energizing and a vision was born to support the wildlife, vegetation and to prepare a place for others to visit and enjoy the surprise of the Lost Hills.
We needed a name for our newly acquired ranch land and the money views atop each mesa were clearly highlights. The Spanish word ‘mesa’ translates literally to ‘table’ which is fittingly symbolic of gathering and sharing provisions. Merging those ideas, along with the unexpected find of the wild topography that's even little known to locals, the name 'Lost Mesa' was born.
It’s been an adventure of discovery and learning and time spent at Lost Mesa Ranch is too infrequent. We hope you visit some day and that you too will ‘find it’ and share in the joy of experiencing God’s beautiful Creation.
